Different accounts of the Speedy story include different locations for the Farewell trading post where the murder of John Sharp took place. Some say it was on Ball Point and some on Washburn Island. Both of these are peninsulas extending south into the eastern reaches of Lake Scugog and they are part of Mariposa Township, which includes Lindsay to the north. The maps below show these landforms. On the left, a current Google map shows the Lake Scugog area where, in the upper right, we can see Washburn Island (the larger, rounder of the two) and Ball Point, sticking down into Lake Scugog. The map on the right is from the Belden County Atlas for Mariposa Township in 1878. It shows the two landforms at the southern extent of Mariposa Township, looking a bit different, but you get the idea.
The Author's Opinion: Ball Point
I know there will be some pushback on this, but I encourage anyone who is interested to review the documents provided here. My reasons for believing the Farewell trading post was on Ball Point is based on the document that is closest to the Farewell family, both in relationship and time. Samuel Pedlar used Moody Farewell's obituary in a very direct way to compile his own history of the event. This is the best information we have. But, have a look at the details and let me know what you think.
