Ontario Underwater Explorers SCUBA Club - May 20, 2021
A very unique presentation of the HMS Speedy story was featured at a virtual meeting of the Ontario Underwater Explorers SCUBA Club on Thursday evening, May 20, 2021. The divers were very interested to hear the Speedy story and The History Guy did not disappoint, presenting the story with an emphasis on the ship and its characteristics and the details of the search for the remains of the Speedy. This was the first time showing clips from the 1989 testing video in a presentation. Attendance was excellent at 32, including two guests invited by the speaker. The first guest was Jim Kennard, the ship wreck explorer who found HMS Ontario in 2008. The second guest was Doug Cowie, manager of the Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, who is very interested in the Speedy story going forward.
Thanks for the opportunity! A link to a recording of this event will be available soon.

The presentation was called "The Wreck of HMS Speedy: The Making of a History Book" and provided an unique perspective of the process that resulted in the book "The Wreck of HMS Speedy: The Tragedy That Shook Upper Canada" which was published in August 2020. The author explained his methods of research and highlighted some of the important documents that were used, down to the collection of documents from Ed Burtt which triggered the book in the first place. The meeting was well attended and the presentation appreciated by the assembled history buffs. A very successful event!
Men's Probus Club of Lindsay - April 13, 2021
The History Guy of Brighton returned as guest speaker at a meeting of the Men's Probus Club of Lindsay, with a virtual presentation about HMS Speedy on April 13, 2021. Note: The recording of this event in Zoom was unsuccessful so I pointed them to the Hanover recording and John Saunders worked out an arrangement with the Hanover folks to download a copy of the video segment of my talk in their meeting. He also sent me an audio recording of the Lindsay talk. Thanks John!

Ontario Genealogy Society, Toronto Branch Meeting - March 22, 2021, 7:30 pm
OGS Toronto Branch hosted Dan Buchanan as guest speaker at their virtual meeting on Monday evening, March 22, 2021. This is a large organization and the attendance at the meeting was high at well over 160. Now THAT's a Zoom meeting! The presentation went very well and there were lots of good questions. The History Guy was in full flight and the audience was entertained and informed, if the feedback has anything to say about it. A Link to a recording of the meeting may be available soon.
Probus Club of Presqu'ile - March 17, 2021, 10:00 am - In-Person and Virtual Meeting in Brighton
The Probus Club of Presqu'ile hosted Dan Buchanan, The History Guy of Brighton, as guest speaker at their meeting of Wednesday, March 17, 2021. This was the first in-person speaking event for the History Guy since last fall, and also the first meeting back for the club, so very highly anticipated all around. The topic of the presentation was the new book, "The Wreck of HMS Speedy: The Tragedy That Shook Upper Canada". The meeting was held at the King Edward Park Community Centre with limited seating and full covid-19 requirements re masks and distancing. There may have been 20 people spread out across the large hall. At the same time, a Zoom meeting was running for those who prefer to listen and watch from home. I understand there were about the same number of people in the Zoom meeting as at the hall. This setup was ambitious and not completely understood going in. As the speaker, I was the pivot point for both meetings. We found we could not use two microphones close together so I had to speak loudly to be heard in the hall. I looked over my notebook screen at the folks in the room and at that little white dot above the screen to look at the folks at home. It was challenging but do-able. In the end, my talk was well received and there was a good question period afterward. I sat in my place while the next speaker did his thing. This event was a bit more stressful than normal, but we learned some good things and got the story out. Good meeting!
Probus Club of Hanover and Area - March 10, 2021, 10:00 am

Good fun.

Abigail was well versed in the story and familiar with the History Guy of Brighton, so the interview was lively and informative. The video will premier on the Cobourg Public Library web site at 7 pm, Saturday, November 14, 2020, and will be available for viewing thereafter. Thanks to the Cobourg Public Library and the Northumberland County Archives for supporting this event.

This club is centered around Manitock and this thoughtful gift was much appreciated. Thanks very much! Hope to tell you another history story one day.

Codrington Farmers' Market - October 25, 2020
This was the last market day of the topsy-turvy 2020 season! The weather co-operated, stayed chilly but moderate, so folks came around to the market. For the History Guy, the day was topped off by a visit by the people who recently bought the King farm, north of Codrington, which is featured in the book "Murder in the Family: The Dr. King Story". Of course, they bought a copy and invited me to visit them when the pandemic is over so they can learn about the history of the place. Welcome to Codrington!

The History Guy had an excellent day at the Cobourg Farmers' Market. All three books sold well and the weather, although brisk early on, proved ideal. This was my first time at this market and will not be my last!

Codrington Farmers Market - Sunday, September 27, 2020
The Codrington Farmers' Market combined with Applefest for a special market day on Sunday, September 27, 2020. Gusty winds were constant customers on this otherwise pleasant day and much attention was paid to setting things back up again. Two-legged customers came around as well, so the day resulted in some sales and lots of good discussions, with masks and distancing in the mix, of course. Fun day at Codrington Farmers' Market.
Word on the Street Toronto 2020 - Virtual Marketplace - from Monday, September 21 to Tuesday, September 30, 2020
WOTS 2020 was a unique experience! The History Guy had a booth in the virtual marketplace for all to see. Avid readers from the Toronto area and beyond browsed the booths and were introduced to new books and authors. The learning curve was steep but the experience was enervating, to say the least. We hope WOTS 2021 will be at Harbourfront Centre and in-person, but the 2020 event was an imaginative and forward-thinking event under the conditions of the pandemic. Thanks to the organizers for their high-intensity hard work. We appreciate it!

Picture
Codrington Farmers' Market - September 13, 2020
The weather put a damper on the Codrington Farmers' Market this morning as rain was present until the sun broke through as we were winding up. In any case, spirits were high and many folks ignored the weather to come to the market. Thanks for stopping to talk and for buying books. Love the Cod market!

United Empire Loyalist Association, Quinte Branch - September 12, 2020
Yes, the UEL Quinte Branch held an in-person meeting on Saturday, September 12, using all the required spacing, distancing and face coverings. I was delighted to speak in person for the first time in more than six months and, as with everything we do these days, learned some good things re working in the covid-19 world. Met some interesting people and sold some books - and had the joy of visiting a very historic part of the province, including the UEL park and research center. Also, I stopped at neighboring St. Alban's church which is slowly coming under the control of a group of concerned citizens and will, along with the wonderful memorial tiles, be preserved in a functional form, well into the future.
Great day at Adolphustown!

Port Perry Farmers' Market - September 5, 2020
A second visit to the Port Perry Farmers' Market proved fruitful due to good book sales as well as the pleasant environment and good discussions I had with many folks. One of those visitors was Laura Colwell, a councillor with the Mississauga of Scugog Island First Nation who came by to pick up a donated copy of the Speedy book for their library.

Beth Bruder visited The History Guy at Cod Market - Sunday, August 23, 2020
On Sunday, Beth Bruder came by the Codrington Farmers' Market to help me celebrate the release of the Speedy book. Make no mistake. Without Beth as my publishing consultant in the last year, this book would not have been published in 2020 and certainly not in the form we see it now. Her experience and knowledge in the publishing industry was put to great use in finding the right people at every step, from editors to publishers to distributors. This is work completely outside the ken of a history geek and I am extremely grateful for Beth's faith in the project as well as her persistence in providing good advice, whether it landed smoothly or not. We made a great team! Thanks, Beth!

Codrington Farmers' Market - Sunday, August 23, 2020
This long-anticipated day was everything I hoped. Sold a lot of books and had great talks. It was REALLY hot, but light breezes across the grass, and friendly faces, kept me cool. Will be back next week!
FYI: Not just the Speedy book - sold a good number of Murder in the Family and 38 Hours. Someone got all three!!
Picture
Port Perry Farmers' Market - Saturday, August 22, 2020
My first time at this venue was very hot but productive as a number of books were sold. It was a lovely spot, down by the edge of Lake Scugog, and I could tell folks about the role Lake Scugog played in the Speedy story. Excellent day! Will be back.

Let's Talk Books, Cobourg - Friday, August 21, 2020
King Street was closed to car traffic and the pedestrians had the run of the place this afternoon as Let's Talk Books in Cobourg had several authors sitting outside on the street, speaking to customers. It was a lovely day and we sold some books, although traffic was light. Will definitely come back sometime!
Vancouver Maritime Museum - August 20, 2020
The Vancouver Maritime Museum welcomed The History Guy of Brighton, Ontario, for a virtual meeting where he told the story of HMS Speedy. It is new info for many on the west coast, but the nautical theme fit perfectly, so there was lots of interest. The VMM Book Store had the books for sale and the VMM September Newsletter included the Speedy book - see to the right.

County and Quinte Living Photo Shoot - July 20, 2020
Dan Vaughan, photographer for the popular magazine, County and Quinte Living, joined Dan Buchanan at the lighthouse on Presqu'ile Point to take some pictures to support an article in the fall issue of the magazine. Catherine Stutt, Editor of the magazine, had requested an article from the author of Speedy book coming in August, and pictures were in order. After the lighthouse, we stopped at Beth Bruder's place on Bayshore Road for some more pics down by the water. Can't wait to see the article!
Codrington Farmers' Market - July 19, 2020
Dan Buchanan, The History Guy of Brighton, was a vendor at the Codrington Farmers' Market on July 19, 2020. By a stroke of luck, the covered space between the market and the community centre was allocated, and served very well on a warm day when the storms held off until the market was over. In fact, it was a good sales day for the History Guy's two existing books and plenty of folks were asking about the Speedy book coming August 18.
I will be back at the Cod Market on August 23 - with the new book to sell! See you there!
