History of Presqu'ile Cottages

The Municipality of Brighton includes the cottages along the northern shore of Presqu'ile Point. In 2024, an active local historian, Susan Brose, published her massive collection of information about the cottages and cottagers on Presqu'ile Point, entitled "Presqu'ile: What Became of the Land". This important work allows me to investigate the history of each individual cottage family from the point of view of family trees and to add very useful information into www.treesbydan.com. The result is a lot more details about individuals and families in the Brighton area, now including their involvement with the long tradition of cottaging at Presqu'ile. In addition, many families have been added who would not be considered local families but, with more rigorous digging, are found to have connections to families in the area either in early generations or in later times. Sometimes people met and married at Presqu'ile. Sometimes they grew up here and left for work and came back to cottage. The mix if additional information about Presqu'ile cottages makes the database more comprehensive and allows it to be of more use to more people as a source of information.

Cottage History for the Public

The work on Presqu'ile cottages was done in two formats. Details were added into the person records in www.treesbydan.com and, at the same time, that same detail was added into PowerPoint presentation files. PowerPoint is very familiar to this historian and represents a convenient and efficient tool for organizing a large volume of information while at the same time producing output that can be presented to the public. As a further step in making the information easy for the public to consume, these PowerPoint files have been converted into PDF files using the Notes format. The images are on the top of the page and the text is on the bottom. The standard search tool can be used to find instances of names in each file.
The information has been divided into four parts as follows:
Part 1 - Lakeshore Cottages and Properties (the presentation at BPL in February 2025)
Part 2 - Cottages on Bayshore from 2 to 81
Part 3 - Cottages on Bayshore from 82 to 127
Part 4 - Cottages on Bayshore from 129 to 192
Here are the PDF versions for the sections I have done at this point. Feel free to download them.
