A history of Presqu'ile was published locally in 1994 by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne and is an excellent collection of information and pictures about the history of this unique place. There is lots of info re the early development of Presqu'ile as well as many references to cottagers from early days to around the 1980s. Several maps are useful and many pictures of places and people support the text.
The original document is no longer in print, but the authors gave permission to Dan Buchanan to scan a copy and make the resulting searchable PDF file available to the public. Copies were printed from the PDF and sold at history events for several years but that supply is gone now too. The searchable PDF version is available for download. . See below. |

Introduction (Taken from Page 1)
The Presqu’ile peninsula which is more than 1,000 acres of prime recreational land on the north shore of Lake Ontario is primarily the property of Presqu’ile Provincial Park with a narrow strand along the bay shore under the administration of the Township of Brighton. This study looks at the historical development of Presqu’ile and its surrounding area. It puts Presqu’ile in the historical context of the region in which it was tied and it identifies ways in which it can be seen as almost an island. This overview pulls together loose information from secondary sources, attempts to fill gaps in our knowledge and confirms through primary research, all available data relating to the history of the site. The objective of the study was to write a history on which a foundation of future interpretation or research can be based. It also provides a context in which to view the existing cultural resources within Presqu’ile Provincial Park. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources through the Napanee District commissioned the study which was undertaken between June and October of 1989.
